Q-Switch Laser Tattoo Removal (Technilase)

Overview

Q-Switch laser tattoo removal is a leading method for safely and effectively removing tattoos. The laser uses very short, high-energy pulses to fragment the tattoo pigments, which are then gradually eliminated by the body.

Technilase Technology / Device Used

  • The device used is a Technilase Q-Switched laser (or an equivalent model such as the Asclepion Q-Switched NanoStar®) used in some centers.

  • It often has multiple wavelengths (1064 nm, 532 nm, etc.), allowing it to precisely target different ink colors.

  • The ultrashort pulse (nanoseconds) creates a photoacoustic effect: the pigment is fragmented without excessively heating the surrounding tissue.

How does it work?

  1. Pigment Targeting
The laser emits a light pulse that is absorbed by the ink particles in the skin. This absorption causes a shock wave that fragments the pigments.

  2. Natural Elimination
After fragmentation, the smaller particles are captured by immune cells (macrophages) and gradually eliminated via the lymphatic system.

  3. Multiple Passes
A single pass is not enough to erase everything. Several sessions are required to gradually treat the tattoo, reducing the pigment density each time.

Session Procedure

Stage Description
Preliminary Consultation Tattoo Analysis (size, colors, age, skin type), verification of contraindications
Preparation Skin cleansing, eye protection, sometimes application of anesthetic cream
Treatment Laser application to the tattooed area, in successive passes
End of session Application of a bandage, healing cream, post-treatment recommendations

The duration varies depending on the surface area and complexity but can range from a few minutes to an hour depending on the size.

Number of sessions & Spacing

  • Generally 4 to 10 sessions are necessary, sometimes more depending on the nature of the tattoo (age, density, color).

  • The recommended interval between sessions is often 5 to 7 weeks, to allow the body to eliminate the pigments before restarting the treatment.

Expected Results

  • Gradual reduction in the intensity of the tattoo with each session

  • Partial or total removal depending on the case

  • On some difficult or old colors, complete removal is not guaranteed.

Possible side effects & Risks

  • Redness, swelling, warmth, tingling

  • Crusts, slight peeling

  • Rare risks: hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation (darker or lighter spots)

  • In case of misuse or excessive power: risk of scarring

Contraindications

  • Skintanned or recent sun exposure

  • Very recent tattoo

  • Pregnancy / breastfeeding

  • Photosensitizing medication

  • Infection, wounds, or inflammation in the treated area

Recommended post-treatment care

  • Gently cleanse the area

  • Moisturize and apply cream Healing

  • Protect from the sun with a high SPF

  • Do not scratch the scabs

  • Follow the practitioner's instructions
